Vande Bharat Express hits 160 Kmph, Successfully Applies Automatic Brakes In First-Ever

In a significant advancement for passenger and transit safety, the Agra railway division conducted a successful trial of an automatic braking system on Friday. The system was installed on the country’s fastest trains, the Vande Bharat Express. This automatic braking system is a component of the domestically developed anti-collision device named ‘Kavach’. According to Prashasti Srivastava, the Agra Railway Division PRO, this trial marked a milestone as it was the first of its kind. During the trial, the train, travelling at a speed of 160 mph, came to a halt automatically without the intervention of the loco pilot. Srivastava stated, “In this inaugural trial, the loco pilot refrained from applying the brakes, yet the train stopped 10 meters before the red signal.”

It is important to note that every Vande Bharat train is equipped with the Kavach system. If the loco pilot is unable to apply the brakes for whatever reason, it has the ability to do so automatically.

Kavach Cannot Work Without Other Components

However, for this system to operate effectively, it requires several essential components. These include station Kavach, RFID tags spanning the track length, and Kavach towers strategically positioned along the railway tracks. Recognizing the significance of these components, the Indian Railways is actively investing resources to deploy them across its network. This comprehensive approach aims to significantly enhance operational safety within the railway system.

Vande Bharat Used In The Trial

The historic trial commenced at approximately 9:30 am, marking a significant moment in railway safety, as it took place between the stations of Mathura and Palwal. This trial, which unfolded throughout the day until 2 pm, was meticulously conducted in both the up and down directions, ensuring comprehensive testing of the automatic braking system. The chosen test vehicle was an eight-car Vande Bharat Express, symbolizing a pivotal step forward in integrating advanced safety measures within the country’s railway network.

Future Testing Plan Of Indian Railways

Following the successful trial, Srivastava mentioned that the railways are now planning to conduct tests on 16-car Vande Bharat trains.

It’s noteworthy that the Indian Railways has undertaken a significant initiative by establishing a comprehensive Kavach network, covering the entire 80-kilometer stretch between Mathura (excluding the station) and Palwal. This extensive network serves as a testament to the railway’s commitment to enhancing safety measures along its routes, ensuring the protection of passengers and infrastructure alike.
