Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Disrupting Peace in Sandeshkhali, Alleges Inaction Against Party Workers

In Kolkata, on the 18th of February in the year 2024, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, vehemently launched an assault on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during her discourse on Sunday. She vehemently accused the party of endeavoring to sow seeds of discord within the tranquil confines of the Sandeshkhali locality nestled in the 24 North Parganas district. In a speech ablaze with fervour, she asserted the proactive measures undertaken by her administration against local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, juxtaposed with the conspicuous absence of any corresponding action from the BJP hierarchy against its cadre.

Amidst the escalating tensions pervading the region, allegations ranging from land usurpation to incidents of sexual harassment and gang rape involving TMC functionaries have come to the fore. The constabulary has already apprehended two TMC leaders, whilst an intensive manhunt persists for the principal accused, Shahjahan Sheikh, purportedly the mastermind behind an assault on officials from the Enforcement Directorate last month.

In her discourse before the press, Banerjee vehemently censured what she delineated as a concerted endeavour by the BJP, Left, and Congress to subvert the endeavours of her administration. She derisively referred to this triumvirate as “Ram, Vaam, Shyam,” insinuating a clandestine collusion aimed at undermining her governance.

“We unfailingly pursue remedial actions in the face of any transgression. Initially, the ED, subsequently the BJP, and then the media. Their concerted efforts aim to disrupt the tranquillity prevailing in Sandeshkhali,” she vociferated.

Banerjee further castigated the Election Commission, accusing it of exhibiting bias in favor of the BJP and alleging the employment of central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the BJP to intimidate her administration.

“They exploit the ED and CBI to intimidate us. Should the Election Commission be executing the directives of the BJP, it behooves them to acknowledge our entitlement to contest and vocalize our stance,” she vociferously proclaimed.

In response to the ongoing agrarian protests unfolding in Punjab and Delhi, Banerjee extended her solidarity towards the farmers whilst castigating the BJP for its handling of the situation.

“The BJP is instigating turmoil across the spectrum, pitting one community against the other. We revere the farmers as the bestowers of sustenance. Yet, observe the callous manner in which they [BJP] are treating them,” she remarked acerbically.

Banerjee also proffered her perspective on the issue of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases, underscoring the imperatives of due process and impartial investigations.

“There exists another facet – PMLA. Should any allegations be levied against an individual, it is incumbent upon authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and furnish a charge sheet. Let justice be dispensed in accordance with the law. However, the indefinite detention of individuals is indefensible,” she accentuated.

The Chief Minister’s censures were not confined solely to the BJP; she also directed her reproach towards the Congress, shedding light on the simmering discord within the INDIA bloc alliance concerning the allocation of seats for the imminent Lok Sabha polls.

“I have apprised the Congress of their conspicuous absence in the state assembly. I extended an offer of two Lok Sabha seats, assuring their triumph therein. Regrettably, they demurred, clamoring for additional seats. I categorically conveyed my stance of conceding not a single additional seat,” she divulged.

Banerjee’s assertions served to underscore the festering political tensions enveloping West Bengal as political entities brace themselves for the forthcoming electoral fray.
