BJP denies involvement in freezing Congress bank account, says it’s routine.
In response to recent allegations by Congress leaders accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of interfering in the recent actions taken by the Income Tax department against the Congress party, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad vehemently refuted any involvement by the BJP.
Addressing the press, Ravi Shankar Prasad firmly denied the claims, asserting, “The BJP categorically rejects the false accusation made by the Congress party regarding the alleged freezing of their bank account at the instigation of the BJP. The BJP had no role in this matter; it was a routine income tax procedure.”
Prasad’s statements come amid assertions by Congress leaders implying that the Income Tax department’s recent actions were politically motivated and orchestrated by the BJP to target the opposition party. Prasad, however, firmly rejected any connection to the BJP, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
The statements by Prasad have raised concerns within Congress offices nationwide, particularly after party leader Ajay Maken disclosed during a press conference on Friday that the Income Tax department had frozen bank accounts belonging to the Youth Congress and the Congress.
Maken revealed that the party had received information on Thursday indicating that banks were refusing to honor cheques issued by the Congress party, and that the accounts of the Youth Congress had been frozen.
“We are currently facing financial constraints, unable to meet expenses such as electricity bills and employee salaries. This will not only affect our Nyay Yatra but also all our political activities,” Maken remarked. He further alleged that the Income Tax department had demanded a recovery of Rs 210 crore from the Youth Congress and Congress.
Following the ITAT’s decision, which allowed the Congress party access to their frozen bank accounts with a lien imposed by the Income Tax Department, Congress leader Ajay Maken highlighted that despite this relief, Rs 115 crore remains inaccessible. Maken clarified, “Despite our petition, both the Income Tax Department and the ITAT have mandated that Rs 115 crore must remain in the banks, serving as a lien on our accounts. We can only utilize funds exceeding this amount. Essentially, Rs 115 crore remains out of reach for us, surpassing the balance in our current accounts.”
In a social media statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge voiced concern, denouncing the Modi government’s action of freezing the accounts of the nation’s largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress, just prior to the Lok Sabha elections. He described it as a severe blow to India’s democracy.
Kharge further asserted, “While the BJP can freely use unconstitutional funds for elections, our crowdfunding efforts are being restricted. This undermines the fairness of future elections.”
Appealing to the judiciary, Kharge urged for the protection of the multi-party system and the preservation of India’s democracy. He pledged to mobilize protests and vehemently oppose such autocratic measures.
