Major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney, and Amazon Prime are actively seeking to grow their revenue and subscriber numbers. To achieve this, they’re implementing various alterations to their streaming services, including restricting password sharing and raising prices for ad-free viewing. Additionally, Amazon Prime has recently removed Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound from its standard service, now requiring users to pay an additional fee for access to high-quality audio and video streaming.

Amazon has confirmed significant changes to its paid subscription service, including the introduction of advertisements and the removal of high-quality audio and video options. Users now have the option to pay an additional $2.99 per month on top of their Amazon Prime subscription to regain access to premium quality content and eliminate ads. According to Amazon spokesperson Katie Barker, the company intentionally removed “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities” from the ad-supported option, making them exclusive to the ad-free option for relevant titles.

These modifications were initially reported by 4KFilme, who observed that content on their Sony, LG, and Samsung smart TVs now displays in HDR10 with Dolby Digital 5.1, instead of the previously available higher-fidelity options included in the Amazon Prime subscription.

It’s worth noting that the price adjustments across streaming services will eventually impact Indian users. Presently, in India, users can avail Prime membership at a discounted rate of Rs 1499 per year, Rs 299 per month, or Rs 599 for 3 months (subject to eligibility). Additionally, there’s the option to purchase the Prime Lite plan for Rs 799 per year (subject to eligibility).

Netflix offers various subscription plans for users in India. These include the Mobile plan priced at Rs 149 per month, the Basic plan at Rs 199 per month, the Standard plan at Rs 499 per month, and the Premium plan at Rs 649 per month. With the Standard Netflix plan, users can stream content on up to two devices simultaneously in Full HD 1080p quality, while the Premium plan allows simultaneous viewing on up to four devices.

However, it’s important to note that the pricing structures of both Netflix and Amazon may undergo changes in the future, and they may differ across countries. For instance, the Amazon Prime Lite subscription is exclusive to the Indian region, while Netflix’s mobile plans were designed specifically for the Indian audience. In other countries, users may only have access to the Basic plan, which is reportedly being phased out to encourage users to opt for higher-tier plans for streaming benefits. Consequently, there’s a possibility of pricing adjustments or alternative strategies being implemented by these platforms in India.

In response to its competitors’ actions, Disney is implementing changes as well. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in August 2023 that Disney+ would begin limiting password sharing starting in 2024, with the new policy set to commence in March of that year. Hugh Johnston, Disney’s chief financial officer, mentioned that the platform will guide users who engage in improper password sharing or use another individual’s login credentials to obtain a Disney+ subscription to instead purchase their own subscription. The new policy may involve scrutinizing account usage to ensure compliance.
